The Internet Personified: U-ma Jo-shi, yay-yay-yay
Uff, really slept in this morning, it's 11.26 and my eyes are barely propped up, but Fabulous Olive Brunch calls so I'm self-medicating with a very strong cup of coffee. Speaking of self-medicating, I also tried to go on vitamins this week, feeling very virtuous and healthy, but oddly enough, after a day of this, I had really bad stomach pains. Acidity or something? Not sure if related, so now I'm taking the vitamins very cautiously. (After I Googled, I noticed that Vitamin B CAN cause acidity, but to be fair, I googled "vitamins + acidity" so self-fulfilling prophecy there.)
This week in newsletter titles: The chant from an old clapping game we used to play: Uma Joshi, yay yay yay, my mother she told me fifty years ago, there came an old man knocking at the door. I was curious about Uma Joshi: why? who? so I did a little (very little) online research, but apart from people sharing the lyrics or it being in "top ten 90s childhood games" or whatever, no one knows who, what or how Uma Joshi is. One of life's little mysteries. .
This week in stuff I bought: Speaking of the '90s, fully indulged own nostalgia by buying this yellow umbrella with 90s stuff all over it. INDIAN 90s stuff. I'm travelling to rainy places next week and next month and, anyway, people need umbrellas!
This week in stuff I wrote: On "Cool Girls" and their feminism over at The Week ** My review of Stephanie Danler's Sweetbitter at the Hindu Literary Review ** Sharing household chores, and why I'm a slob (because of Linda Goodman.) ** On student suicides and my own personal struggle to accept failure up on the blog **
This week in cats: Thousand years ago, we took Olga to a cheap vet (Dr Sarabjeet, CR Park) to get her spayed, because our usual guy was asking for something like 8 or 10,000 bucks, which is EXPENSIVE, yo. Unfortch, we should have gone for quality over a bargain, because he left something inside of her. For those of you unfamiliar with a cat's anatomy, even a little piece of their already teeny uteresus (uterii?) left inside can not only generate enough hormones to keep the cat continuously in heat, but also regrow and make a whole new tiny uterus. Magic! Anyhow, we were going a bit mad: she was so LOUD, she was so pissy (cats in heat mark their territory all over the place), and Sarabjeet was useless in follow up, and Dr Rana (who we love) was all like, "Oh you should have brought her here in the first place." (THANKS.) Until we went to the lovely vets at Alphapet, who did one surgery last year on her right side and just did another one this year on her left. And you guys, we have success! An entire ovary which that stupid Sarabjeet left behind. Olga is now the best cat, can I say that? But she is! She's pretty and cuddly and very chatty and insists on sleeping between us in bed at night. (I'm holding my breath, but at least she's nice NOW.) Unfortunately, her being in our bedroom means her Devoted Squishy bangs on the door all night just to get to her. I know, I know, we live in a zoo. But it's a nice zoo.
Next week in travel: I'm off to Bhutan for the lit fest! If you've been to Thimpu before, please send tips on what I should see/do/buy/eat. Thank you!
This week in food and drink: On a friend's recommendation, tried Big Fat Sandwich in Saket, which I was impressed by. Great bread. But I ordered the coffee glazed bacon sandwich (wouldn't you?) and found the bacon far too bitter. The coffee glaze didn't work for me, so next time I'm going to stick to a plain ol' grilled chicken or something. Still, very impressed with bread quality. Reminded me of Elma's short lived sandwich shop back in the day: Edward's.
Reading list: HT Brunch has a nice slideshow of old photos of Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta ** How people are appropriating poverty for hipster purposes ** Behind the scenes at a fancy Delhi restaurant * This adopted Indian origin girl wants to find her long-lost sister. ** On our three female athletes and "fighting like a girl." **
Have a great week!
